Looking to Cut Back On Utility Costs? You NEED to See This!

So you’ve moved into your new apartment?

Congrats! That’s all well and good but chances are you’ve probably been taking a glance at your wallet and worried about just why so much of its contents have been given up to utility expenses! That’s a perfectly natural worry to have and it’s definitely something that everyone would like addressed if it means having the chance to cut back on major costs.

Utilities can definitely eat up a big part of your monthly paycheck. And when you’re living alone without roommates, it can be especially hectic keeping track of expenses in order to make ends meet. So with that said, I’ve decided to offer some friendly life-hacks to help you cut back on utility costs. Sure, it might take a little bit of extra work on your part, but these handy tips are definitely useful and worth it if it means having the chance to cut back on major utility costs that plague you on the daily! So without further ado, here are some helpful utility-costing facts you won’t want to miss! Let’s go!

  1. ASK ABOUT DISCOUNTED RATES! Certain utility providers offer cheaper overall rates during certain times for the day. That basically means that when you do your laundry or use up other high energy-intensive resources, you could be doing so during hours when it could be MORE expensive! Take some notes and look for hours when the costs are less expensive and adjust your chores accordingly. Nighttime chores would probably be preferable.

  2. CUT BACK! Don’t freak out. I’m definitely not saying that you need to let go of all the cozy comforts of living your best life. BUT you can adjust your homelife behaviors slightly to use less energy. This includes taking shorter showers, turning off lights when not present in rooms and even turning off the AC when not home (assuming you don’t have pets that need it!) Just slightly tweaking your routine usage can really make a difference in the big picture!

  3. SWITCH TO SMART POWER STRIPS! Smart power strips basically are handy for ensuring that you’re not wasting useless energy. They automatically cut off the electric current to devices when you’re not using them, severing any unnecessary power usage when you don’t need them.

  4. WASH CLOTHES ON COLD! If possible, of course. Fun fact about cold water--it actually requires less energy to wash than hot or warm water. Thus, you’ll be able to save a lot more money this way! You can also use dryer balls in the dryer to decrease your overall drying time for clothes. You can even air-dry your clothes if you’re feeling especially ambitious.

  5. CHANGE YOUR LIGHTS TO LEDS! LED lights not only have longer-lasting effects than that of the normal lightbulb, but they are also 80% more efficient than a normal bulb and can help to lower your electric bill. Remember, every little bit helps when it comes to cutting down energy consumption!

  6. INSTALL AN ENERGY-SMART THERMOSTAT! This can be really handy for tracking your indoor temperature. It’ll help you tailor the temperature inside based on your personal schedule, helping you save money when you’re not home or when you simply require less heat or cold. You can ensure that you have everything you need temperature-wise while still finding solid times to conserve how much energy you’re using!

Those are only a few ways to help you save. There’s plenty of other options out there! Managing your utility bills can be a hassle when you’re first starting out but once you get the hang of it and know how to slice up your overall bill, it can be an absolute breeze!
