How To Stay Safe In Your New Apartment!

Moving into your new apartment can be a breeze, especially if you’re familiar with the general atmosphere and neighborhood you’re situated in. That said, it can still be a little scary for newbies who are nervous about living by themselves for the first time.

Even if you’re living with friends, roommates, or significant others, it’s a lot more comforting to know what you’re up against, especially when it comes to your personal safety. It never hurts to brush up on some helpful tips and tricks to ensure that your safety is your top priority!

Luckily, that’s why I’m here. Below, I’ll be dishing out some simple, but nonetheless handy information to help you keep up to speed on proper apartment safety. Ready to get started? Let’s roll!

  1. KEEP YOUR BLINDS CLOSED! Don’t let neighbors and strangers have a front-row seat to watch you go about your day. You’re welcome to use your blinds on a bright summer day but always be mindful of who may be looking in. Especially make sure to keep your blinds closed at night. The less your apartment stands out, the better off you’ll be in the long run.

  2. KEEP YOUR DOORS AND WINDOWS LOCKED! Always make sure that all entrances and openings into your apartment are nice and sealed whenever you go out. You don’t want any unexpected visitors dropping by when you’re out on the town.

  3. LOOK FOR SECURITY CAMERAS IN THE PARKING LOT! Many apartments have the benefit of equipping helpful security cameras to keep an eye on everyone’s cars, as well as the apartments in the surrounding area. Keep an eye out for them. If you suspect something fishy may be going on, police can review all camera footage to confirm your suspicions.

  4. NOTE ALL FIRE EXITS! In case of a fire, it’s important to be mindful of all your safety exits around the building. Have a plan in advance for where you can readily escape in the event of a fire-related emergency. Knowing where you need to be can make all the difference during a tense situation.

  5. DON’T STORE VALUABLE OBJECTS ON YOUR BALCONY! Always expect the unexpected whenever you’re living alone. As such, it’s important to not dump all your favorite belongings on your balcony for extra storage space. Having some plants or a chair or two is just fine. But also be mindful of just how many items you have out in the open.

  6. BE MINDFUL OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS! Most of the time, you’ll be just fine. But always be wary and watchful of your surroundings whenever you move around your apartment, especially at night. You’ll find that most of your neighbors are likely very friendly and accommodating. But with that in mind, always make sure that you know exactly what’s going on around you at all times.

  7. COMMUNICATE WITH PROPERTY STAFF! You’re always free to ask the leasing office about proper safety tips. Lots of residences come equipped with helpful safety resources, from cameras to patrolling security. That said, you can still check in with staff if you have questions, concerns, or if you’ve witnessed suspicious behavior. Remember that the staff is here to help you and you can count on them to ensure you have a safe and relaxing experience in your new apartment home.

Chances are you’ll find that living in your new apartment is no hassle at all. Most apartments offer optimized safety for all residents. But with that said, it’s still important to always be prepared and watchful for potential what-if scenarios. Most importantly, remember to have fun! Your apartment is your home, after all. Follow all necessary precautions and you’ll find that living in an apartment is worth every moment.
