Your Pet, Your Apartment, And You!

When you move out for the first time, it’s pretty much a no-brainer that you’ll also be bringing your furry friend with you as well in the event that you have a pet.

But don’t go about it thinking that it’s that simple--things can get pretty complicated when you’re moving into your new home with a pet in tow. Most apartments allow pets, especially cats and dogs. But there are things you need to be mindful of when you’re bringing your pet along for your very first move.

Luckily, I’m here to help! Today, I’ll be breaking down some important things you’ll need to know for whenever you’re moving in with a pet. You’re not going to want to miss out on these sweet tips and tricks to help you and Fido acclimate to your new apartment life together. Are you ready? Let’s get started!

  1. EXAMINE THE PET POLICY! Certain apartments place restrictions on certain dog breeds. Your dog might be the sweetest pooch on earth, but sometimes rules are enforced for the relief and safety of everyone. Make sure that when you’re getting ready to move into a new apartment that you have a look at their pet policy first and foremost so that you can determine if the residence has any restrictions on certain breeds. Plus, it’s just a good idea to review the policy for the sake of knowing with 100% certainty what you’re getting into!

  2. PET FEES? Keep track of this as well. Some apartments charge more than others. Some are incredibly lenient when it comes to pet fees. If you’re looking to save money, it’s important to find pet-friendly apartments that don’t charge too much on pet fees on a monthly basis.

  3. WHAT KINDS OF AMENITIES DOES THE RESIDENCE OFFER? This obviously applies less to cats than it does to dogs. Lots of apartments feature some truly great pet-related services for tenants to enjoy. For example, many feature some really huge, wonderful dog parks for you to take your precious pup to each day during or after their walk. You really can tell the quality of an apartment based on how great the dog park is.

  4. PET-PROOF YOUR NEW APARTMENT! If possible, make sure to pet-proof your apartment in advance. While your pet will be living with you, it’s important to make sure that your pet is not able to damage the interior of the apartment. Having lasting damages can result in potential fees when it’s time to move out! So just remember to be mindful and be wary!

  5. PREPARE YOUR PET FOR THE MOVE! Pets can get really nervous before and after a big move. Make sure they have everything they need to keep them as relaxed and comfortable as possible during the move. Perhaps include their favorite toy in their crate, or even a piece of your clothing to smell for familiarity. Once they enter your new abode, give them plenty of time to explore and adjust to their new surroundings.

Preparing to move into your new home with a pet can get a bit hectic but it will all work out as long as you remember to follow these simple rules. Together, you and your pet can enjoy plenty of happy years together in your brand new home!
