When it comes to setting up your brand new apartment, chances are that you’re going to feel a bit fidgety when it comes to really helping it feel like home! That’s a pretty common sentiment overall, especially if this is your first apartment and you’re moving in for the first time. 

Setting up a good-looking apartment can, however, be pretty easy if you know what to do or where to look. You don’t have to have a huge artist’s eye so long as you always be mindful of the big picture.   1. THINK ABOUT HOW YOU’LL USE IT: Before you start working on your new decorations, pause and think about how you plan on using your apartment in the following months (or years). Are you going for the professional look or are you looking for something more relaxed and laid back? Take a moment to brainstorm and develop a clear picture in your mind on what sort of image you wish to cultivate. Once you have it, I can promise that the whole decorating process will be much easier!

  2. SWAP OUT YOUR LIGHTING: Lighting is everything. Having good lighting can add to the overall glow or feelings that surround you. When setting up your apartment, make sure to pick some lighting that speaks to your mood and sense of creativity. Are you more of a fluorescent light person or do you prefer something in color? It’s your space so alter it in the way that fits you best!

  3. GET SOME ART ON THE WALLS: If you want to, that is. Everyone is different after all. Decorate your apartment with wall art that drives your passion. Some people like putting up their favorite movie posters. Some personally enjoy classic art. Some with a more eclectic personality might enjoy more contemporary pictures. Whatever the case may be, it’s important that you decorate your space with art that evokes your tastes. 

  4. BE MINDFUL OF COLORS: Some colors clash. A green sofa might not look the best near a dark-colored wall. Something with bright colors might clash with the rest of the room. You don’t have to be extremely color-savvy but always make sure that nothing stands out against the background. 

  5. DON’T GO OVERBOARD: Whenever it’s time to move back out, you’re going to want to make sure that the apartment is left in the same condition it was when you first moved in. So make sure that, whenever you’re decorating, you don’t do anything that could permanently alter the unit. Otherwise, you might have to pay a fee and no one wants that! Always be mindful of your decorations and plan accordingly.


Having a brand new apartment can feel a bit daunting with how barren it might look the first time you walk through the door. But the good news is that it doesn’t last forever.
